Juneteenth Nevada 2023

The National Theme is Perfecting Unity. To bring all Americans together to celebrate our common bond of freedom through recognition, observance and historic preservation of Juneteenth in America.


Juneteenth Nevada needs your support to help fund the 2023 activities:

For year number 13, there will be Juneteenth flag raisings in North Las Vegas, Henderson and Las Vegas, Music From the Belly of the Slave Ship , Juneteenth Unity PowWow, Vending and networking opportunities, recognition of military veterans and seniors and more. Events will be presented free and open to the public.  

We will be branching out in a couple new directions for 2023.  

THE JUNETEENTH AFRICAN AMERICAN ACADEMICS AND ARTS CAMP (JAAAAC)

In preparation of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday and in a Celebration of the King Legacy, Juneteenth Nevada will be offering, to youth, an afterschool camp reaching across the curriculum for an educational experience within the community. This is planned as the first of a series which will include reading, math, financial literacy skills, social skills, media, music and arts.  It will be held in West Las Vegas from   January 9-19 at the West Las Vegas Library Theatre· 947 Lake Mead · Las Vegas .   Monday-Friday 3-5:30pm . No camps January 13th or 16th.

The Juneteenth African American Arts and Academics Camp will:

1. Serve students ranging from the ages 10-14

2. Enrollment will be 10- 20 children from different ethnic backgrounds.

3. Majority of students of the African American culture

4. Juneteenth 101 will be included in sessions

5. African American History activities.

6. Include 8 leadership skills development training

7. Encourage skills in reading, math, research, computers, and art

8. Feature Camp Finale

Evaluation

1. Evaluations at beginning and end of camp

2. Reports and presentations at end of camp

3. Surveys

2023 MISS JUNETEENTH NEVADA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

For young ladies from 14 to 18, we will be taking applications for the 2023 Miss Juneteenth Nevada Scholarship Program beginning at the end of January. The winner of the competition will be the Nevada youth ambassador and travel with companion to New Orleans in October to compete in the National Miss Juneteenth Scholarship Program.  

Prior to the June event there will be  six weeks of training and coaching in etiquette, social media, public speaking, grooming/makeup, and Juneteenth and Nevada history. Two sessions each are planned for Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Henderson. Community Service and good grades will be required. Photo session and judges' interview will complete the program prior to the Juneteenth selection and coronation. Scholarships will be awarded to the Queen and first two runner ups.

June – Events leading to Juneteenth and the Juneteenth Miss Juneteenth Scholarship Program

July – Buffalo Soldiers Luncheon

August – Landing Day

September – Back To School

October - National Miss Juneteenth Scholarship Program in New Orleans

November – Thanksgiving

December – Kwanzaa / Christmas

Some of the items we will need this coming year will be book bags, Juneteenth calendars, android or apple notebooks, musicians and performers, locations, video and photo documentation, web maintenance, make up kits, crowns and sashes, clothing designers, t-shirts, swag bags, hotel accommodations, coaches, makeup artist, and dance teacher, banner and promotions, awards, stipends, transportation – ground and air, insurance, operations., media, marketing assistance, and of course, YOUR Support.

Budget draft will be available by the end of January after we confirm locations, dates and performers.
